What is Internal Medicine?
Internists are specialists who apply scientific knowledge and clinical expertise to the diagnosis, treatment, and compassionate care of adults across the spectrum from health to complex illness. They are primary care doctors as well who see adults for preventive care and general health maintenance, screening, and management of acute and chronic illnesses. The scope of illnesses treated in internal medicine is very broad and includes; high blood pressure (hypertension), high cholesterol, cancer screening, new symptom workup, blood tests, diabetes, acid reflux, pneumonia, colds and flu, GI symptoms, weight management, most common infections and injuries, physical exams, and patient health education.
